Veronika Košková Internship in Bentley

2/25/2016

I worked in the Purchase Department in the Projects team which consisted of 16 nice colleagues who were always prepared to help me kindly if I needed it. The beginning was quite exacting as we had to manage our bank account and request all Bentley systems such as SAP, TEVON, AVON, B-release database, but everything was arranged sooner than we expected.

I would like to share all the experience I gained during my mandatory internship. I always wanted to spend this part of my studies abroad so I tried to get the best internship on offer, which is at Bentley Motors and I managed it. I spent half a year in the United Kingdom from 31/01/2015 until 31/ 07/2015, working for this company. I think there is no need to introduce it anymore as everybody knows that is a famous producer of luxury cars, which I had the opportunity to prove this many times on test drives. I just want to mention that Bentley is based in a small town in Crewe which is quite a big railway junction, so you can travel almost anywhere by train and it is quite convenient I would say.

When I was informed about Bentley hiring me, I couldn’t believe that it was true. I didn’t think I managed it because I thought that I failed during the telephone interview, so I just stopped hoping I would be successful. Anyway I was very happy after they informed me and I was looking forward to it very much. But after some time, some problems arose and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to manage everything on my own, so I started meeting with one other girl who was coming with me to UK and we planned everything together, which was good. Afterwards, we agreed to live together so we found a house which suited us very well. Our house was big, clean and spacious. My room was especially big, and I had my own bathroom so I was very satisfied with the accommodation. What’s more, the house was situated very close to Bentley, only 8 minutes by foot, so we found it really convenient and a big advantage.

The first day at work was a bit exhausting for us but on the other hand interesting. We had an all-day induction where some people from each department presented a lot of information connected with Bentley operations, the pension scheme, etc. Afterwards, we had a factory tour where we saw every part of the assembly line and every process was explained properly so it was really interesting for us. Over the following days we were usually in our office. Our office was quite a big open office style with around 110 colleagues. It was so unusual for me but after a few days I got used to the noise and the many people there. For the first two weeks we overlapped with the previous interns. They explained to us everything about the company culture and our tasks and projects and showed us all the important points. Everything was much easier then and I was able to work on my own soon after.

Every day I received an agenda of changes for the AEKO meeting which took place every day and I had to prepare all packs for each project, find out information about buyers and suppliers and make sure everything was ready for the discussion. This meeting was attended by one person from each part of the business – logistics, purchase, engineering, finance, manufacturing and these people submitted their costs about some change of a part of the car. Approved changes had to be completed in systems, an appropriate form filled in and given to the buyers who added costs from supplier. My next task was to attend the LSC meeting where the buyers presented their offers from suppliers to people from each part of business as well and I sent out the LSC live agenda to make sure that everybody was coming in for the right project and in time.

On a daily basis I had two further projects to work on. I had to analyse changes for the whole VW group in the system AVON. I generated these new approved changes from the system and then processed them as the Bentley ones. The second one was called B-release module, in which I was receiving parts from engineers. My task was to update the drawing date and K stand in SAP and then in the B-release database and send this to the buyers who had to reprint their orders and send it to the supplier. My last task was to send master colour samples for the new SUV based on supplier requests.

There were so many other interns especially from Germany. We became friends very soon and started spending our free time together. We made a lot of trips, attended events actions and had parties. We had a lot of fun together and enjoyed our free time a lot. We visited many nice cities such as Manchester, Chester, Birmingham, London, York, Oxford, Llandudno but we liked Liverpool most of all and we returned there many times. And we loved Dublin as well where we spent 3 days. There was such a magical atmosphere there. We visited some national parks as well, such as the Peak District, the Lake District, Conwy Mountain. The countryside is so beautiful here. And the people are really nice and friendly. I was very kindly surprised by that.

I definitely do not regret that I decided to leave and do my internship in UK. I would say it was the best part of my studies. I found real friends and we enjoyed the time here, and I gained a lot of invaluable experience in Bentley. I even got used to the rainy days, so I didn’t mind it then at all. My roommate, a friend and I extended our stay here for another half a year, so we are looking forward to gaining further experience. I would strongly recommend the internship at Bentley as it was my best decision to go there and it was worth it!!! I believe I will remember this part for my whole live.
