From 10th February till 25th July 2014 I had a great opportunity to be a part of the Purchasing department in Bentley motors Ltd. in a small town called Crewe. Crewe is situated in the north-west part of Great Britain.
Before leaving the Czech Republic other outgoing interns and me decided to live together in the UK. We arranged the accommodation in advance in a row house in a quiet part of Crewe – 10 minutes long walk to Bentley. We were really happy about this distance, especially in rainy mornings.
Purchasing department is a big open space, where is enough space for all of the teams of purchasing. My placement was in the General Purchase team. General purchase is responsible for ensuring the purchase of various types of goods and services. For example: IT systems, buildings, machines for the production line… etc. My team was the best team ever. All of my colleagues were always there for me. Because of their kindliness and support I’ve become a trusted member of their team.
My main responsibility was evaluation and confirmation of POR’s for Design & Development in the total value under £ 20000. Because of this responsible task I was daily in contact with engineers from Bentley who created these requirements and with suppliers. My communication skills became much better. I’ve become more confident with myself during speaking in English with others and I’ve learned many new technical terms. The next responsibility was booking the emergency transports. I had to send a request to the suppliers from the supplier’s list, evaluate received offers with logistics department and after that book the transport. These requests were quite urgent, it had to be completed within an hour. Thanks to this I’ve learned how to set priorities and to focus on the essentials in order to save time and accelerate processes. During the whole internship I was receiving tasks from all members of my team. It helped me to summarize my findings about the processes in the General Purchase and in the whole company as well.
Most of my free time in the UK was devoted to travelling. Because I’d already visited London (its surroundings as well) and Scotland before my internship in the UK, I was interested in discovering another new places – I visited famous cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham. I accepted the challenge to climb Snowdon - the biggest mountain of the Wales’s National park Snowdonia. I can’t forget to mention The Lion King Musical with its amazing atmosphere in Liverpool Empire.
I really appreciate the opportunity to work for such a luxurious company as Bentley. I would definitely recommend the international internship to all the other students. It’s a great opportunity to get new work experience and to improve communication skills. To meet new country, its culture and new friends as well!
This half year was an unforgettable part of my life, it was worth it!
